The Episcopal Church of the Holy Family was incorporated on March 27, 1957, as Holy Angels Episcopal Church. The Charter members worshipped first in the basement of the Senior Warden’s home then at a dance studio, and later at Hibiscus Elementary School where the congregation often referred to themselves as members of “Holy Hibiscus.” In 1961, the first church building was constructed. This was intended for use as the Sunday school and a day school; it became all these things, as well as the regular place of worship. At this time, the name of the parish was changed to Holy Family, at the request of the Bishop, who had three parishes in the diocese with angelic names, and he was “having trouble keeping (his) angels straight.” In 1971, St. Anthony’s parish in Carol City merged with Holy Family and brought us many new members. Since 1980, the parish has grown, as many West Indians have moved into the neighborhood. At Holy Family we are still blessed to be what some might call multi-cultural, with members of varied ethnic and cultural backgrounds playing an active role in parish life, a diverse family many different gifts! On Ascension Day 1987, we dedicated our new church building, the beautiful house of prayer we dreamed of for so many years. With our expanded facilities have come new opportunities for growth and ministry in our community. This is an exciting time for Holy Family. We invite all our neighbors to join us in work and worship as we seek to share God’s love with our community! As we continue our mission statement: To Be Holy and To Be a Family, may we seek "UNITY AND HEALING IN THE NEW MILLENNIUM". |
